Assurance and Certification
Natural Carbon Solutions, our certification and verification body is a pioneer in carbon accountability. Our approach to ecological offsetting and certification helps our clients achieve maximum visibility and assurance for their environmental impact. We ensure best practice by adhering to ISO standards and the International Green House Gas (GHG) protocol. This means we can ensure your organisation, building, product or event achieves credible, robust sustainable solutions that help reach your environmental targets.
We also facilitate and deliver numerous other third party certifications such as BREEAM, LEED, WELL and ISOs, with over 13 years of experience in the delivery of environmental certifications in all sectors you can rest assured that we can make compliance and certification a straightforward process.
There are multiple certification schemes that verify the environmental and human wellbeing credentials of urban development and buildings. We deliver all certification schemes such as every BREEAM scheme, the WELL Building Standard, Home Quality Mark, LEED, SKA, NABERS, Fitwel and Passive House.
We also provide certification and assurance for energy consumption and energy management. This is typically provided via Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) for both domestic and non-domestic buildings. Energy management certification can be provided for buildings that are in use by ISO 50001 and energy audits for ESOS compliance.
A building’s carbon footprint is split into two separate stages; construction and operation. Construction comprises of all the environmental impact associated with materials, assembly, and completion of the physical project. Operation comprises the energy, water and maintenance required to occupy the building annually. Buildings can either be Net Zero Carbon in construction by offsetting the material and assembly impacts with offsetting solutions after the building is built, or operationally Net Zero by offsetting the carbon generated from running a building at the end of each year. We offer certification at the key stages of a building project so that critical targets are measured and achieved. Our work is aligned with best practice standards such as ISO 146067, 14040 and 14044 and RICS Guidance and Building Regulations.
By mapping the impact of the organisation’s supply chain we can see how all things required directly or indirectly in the running of the organisation are impacting the environment. It considers purchased electricity, fuel combustion, travel, purchases and waste consumption. Offsetting to become Net Zero Carbon or Climate Positive is a journey, with reporting and offsetting done annually. We offer certification at the key stages of an organisations decarbonisation journey so that critical targets are measured and achieved. Our work is aligned with best practice standards such as ISO 146064 and the GHG Protocol.
We use Life Cycle Assessments to review the environmental impacts of all stages of a product’s life, from raw material extraction, materials processing, manufacture, distribution, use and waste. There are two options to this assessment; Cradle-to-Gate: which measures GHG emissions from the extraction of raw materials through to product manufacture up to leaving the factory, and Cradle-to-Grave: which measures GHG emissions the same as Cradle-to-Gate but then includes distribution, use and disposal. Products can be made Net Zero Carbon or environmentally neutral by offsetting their impacts with Nature-based Solutions. We offer certification at the key stages of a products lifecycle so that critical targets are measured and achieved. Our work is aligned with best practice standards such as ISO 146067, 14040 and 14044.
Certification for events can either be for a one-off event or a recurring event. It considers energy for the venue, all travel, stands and stalls, accommodation, waste and consumed items. We map an event’s anticipated impact prior to it happening to understand how best to reduce an event’s impact. Then we calculate its actual impact once the event is completed and we have collected the real life data to understand how successful the reduction strategy was and what offsetting solutions are required to make the event. An event can be made Net Zero Carbon by offsetting their impacts with offsetting solutions after the event has taken place. We offer certification at the key stages of an event so that critical targets are measured and achieved. Our work is aligned with best practice standards such as ISO 146067, ISO 20121, and the GHG Protocol.
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are standardised documents which provide data on the environmental impact of a product. The LCA method is used to produce EPDs for all manner of items. Producing EPDs is voluntary, but is an invaluable way to provide transparency and promote awareness of the environmental impacts associated with a product’s consumption and use.
The demand for products with EPDs is growing and EPDs are increasingly becoming a way to provide product differentiation for the consumer which will enhance the likelihood of selection or specification as public sector bodies and some private companies set minimum environmental standards for the products in their supply chains.
EPDs are third party verified by the relevant body within a given geographical region. Our team’s role is to gather all of the relevant product data, undertake the LCA, report in the standardised format and liaise with the relevant body to get the EPD published.
