The Brighton College Boarding House project has been given another accolade – as a winner of the Civic Trust Awards 2016. Eight Associates acted as the Sustainability Consultant and BREEAM Assessor for the project.
Brighton College required a 70 bedroom boarding house, to be delivered within a year. A team of consultants and builders was rapidly assembled to deliver this design and build project.
The boarding house was designed to complement and reflect the existing historic campus buildings, with its gabled roof, knapped flint on the internal facades and soft red brick on the external facades. The interior consists of a variety of bedrooms and shared shower rooms, a common room and a kitchen. In line with Brighton and Hove’s ‘Sustainable Building Design’ planning requirements, every consideration was made to ensure the efficient use of energy, water and materials. The BREEAM assessment demonstrated how the building achieved the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating through using responsibly sourced materials, best practice construction methods, and the installation a number of sustainable features including solar thermal panels, air source heat pumps and rainwater harvesting. The building also had a high level of performance for health and wellbeing, meeting good thermal comfort levels and daylighting requirements.
