Shakespeare’s Globe is developing a new-build West Block and refurbishing its existing basement and backstage spaces. The project at the iconic building on London’s South Bank is designed to deliver improved events and exhibition spaces, upgraded backstage facilities, rehearsal rooms, education studio spaces and office areas and a world-leading library and archive for Shakespeare studies.

Our sustainability consultants and BREEAM assessors at Eight Associates worked closely with the Southwark based architects, Allies and Morrison, and M&E consultants Skelly & Couch to develop the project’s sustainability strategy, which is currently on track to secure a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating for the new build elements of the project, and a high BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating for the refurbishment.

Eight Associates’ BREEAM assessment for the development includes measures to design out potential flood risk given the building’s proximity to the River Thames. Passive design features include optimising the use of daylighting and natural ventilation within the new build. In addition, an adaptation to climate change strategy is to be undertaken by Eight Associates to explore how the building’s design increases its resilience to climate change impacts such as increasing thermal temperatures and flood risk. The development is also on target to achieve a 10% reduction in CO2 through specifying a Ground Source Heat Pump.

The building will benefit from significantly reduced running costs, whilst ensuring the occupants have a healthy and high quality environment in which to visit and work. Funding plans to realise the project are ongoing, with RIBA Stage 2 designs complete, and regular design team progress reviews and consultations scheduled as the project progresses.
